  I can feel the link to my Alpha die inside me like a rubber band stretching too far. A new connection begins to form. Curiosity gets the better of me and I return my gaze to the challenge.

  Evo’s white wolf stands over the dying gray wolf. The gray wolf’s struggles dissipate as his body becomes weak from the extent of his injuries. I watch as the light leaves Craig’s wolf’s eyes and the invisible rubber band snaps.

  Everyone remains silent, not a sound except for the persistent downpour and cracking of thunder. I feel Evo’s new position as my Alpha snap into place, a new band forming. His presence as our new Alpha is a comfort where there had previously been none.

  “Holy shit,” is the first, and only, thing I say. He fucking did it.
